8th Railway Talk
4 December 20248th RAILWAY TALK
4 December 2024
Due to climate change it is likely that weather hazards will become more frequent and that puts the Railways in a difficult position. Learn about UIC’s strategies to become more resilient and Risk Management from a reinsurance perspective.
Managing weather & other hazards in the Railway
Programme:
Presentations & Speakers:
Chair: Marco Corradini (CIFI)
FIRST PRESENTATION
Influence of climate change on the railway infrastructure – Risk Management from a reinsurance perspective
- Development of climate change and what influence this can have on infrastructure and operations in the transport sector (railway).
- What risks/challenges exist and how can they be overcome:
- Regarding operating locations (train stations, etc.)
- In terms of infrastructure/rail networks
- Understand – how great is the risk of natural disasters today and how will the risk change due to climate change in the future
- Measure – how high will the expected damage/risk event be
- Manage – options for action in risk management including risk transfer
- How MunichRe supports companies in mastering climate risks

SECOND PRESENTATION
Resilience against natural hazards: How UIC is tackling resilience in railways thanks to the RERA projects
The presentation will show the UIC strategy about resilience and how to make railways more resilient against natural hazards such as floods, strong winds or high temperatures. Furthermore, it will briefly cover strategies in case of earthquakes and cyber-attacks.
All the solutions are focused on providing tools to Rail Operators, who are the main contributors to the UIC Resilient Railways task force.
