VDEI elects a new executive committee – a female President for the first time

VDEI elects a new executive committee – a female President for the first time

Frankfurt am Main, November 17, 2022

During the 42nd Federal Congress on November 12th, 2022 in Hamburg, the Association of German Railway Engineers (VDEI) elected a new Executive Committee.

Birgit Milius was elected President, replacing Thomas Mainka, who did not run for re-election after two terms in office. Joachim Warlitz was confirmed as the first Vice President for a fourth term of office. Jürgen Murach became Second Vice President. The following spokespersons for the different departments were newly elected into the Executive Committee: Svetoslava Maslinkova (Technical Equipment Department), Andreas Mack (Railway Systems Department) and Andreas Henschel (Vehicles Department). The election confirmed Reiner Altmann as spokesman for the Infrastructure Department, Lothar Legler as federal secretary and Tobias Barthel as federal treasurer.

With Birgit Milius, for the first time since the association was founded in 1949, a woman was elected for President of the honorary executive committee. “In cooperation with the association, I will work to promote public understanding of the railway system. We are facing major challenges if we are to succeed in making Deutsche Bahn fit for the future. Rail-bound transport can and will make an important contribution to solving climate change and at the same time offer attractive, modern and future-oriented jobs – we want to support this with our specialist knowledge and in cooperation with politics, business and research,” says the newly elect President of the VDEI. “I want to get people excited about the railway system, working in the railway system, but of course also for working in the association. Together with the members we will discuss how we can further develop the association in a sustainable and attractive way”. Birgit Milius works full-time at the Technical University of Berlin as head of the Department of Railway Operations and Infrastructure.

Retrospective – UEEIV at the IAF Münster

Retrospective – UEEIV at the IAF Münster

Finally, for the first time since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, the “Railway Family” met again at the 28th International Exhibition for Track Technology (iaf) from 31st May to 02nd June 2022 in Münster (Germany).

The Union of European Railway Engineers Associations (UEEIV) was represented with its own booth, strategically located close to the member associations VDEI (Germany) and SITK (Poland), and took the chance to present its new visions and priorities for the next years to the visitors.

Especially young railway engineers showed interest in the EURAIL-ING certification provided by the UEEIV.

Furthermore, the certification “operator of track-laying machines” was relevant to many visitors from railway administrations as well as to operators of tamping machines, as this trade show is renowned for exhibiting numerous large track-laying machines in the open-air exhibition area (photo 2).

Taking the opportunity of finally meeting again, the UEEIV held its General Assembly during the iaf trade show, confirming the new orientation of the UEEIV in a mission/vision/task paper in addition to the election of the new President (Olaf Scholtz-Knobloch) and some other members of the Presidium.

With the philosophy “connect – share – certify”, the umbrella organization of the European railway engineer associations will significantly increase its activities – together with the member associations and the supporting members – and is looking forward to becoming a platform for many new members in the future.

Preview: the UEEIV will also be represented at the Innotrans Berlin from 20th to 23rd of September 2022 with an exhibition stand and is also planning a “Get-Together” for all certified EURAIL-INGs!
